Challenges Abound

Adolescence is a critical period in a youth’s development and can

often contain equal amounts of dynamic, exciting change as well

as confounding behavior, extreme acting out, and overwhelming

emotions. The good news is that although this phase of develop-

ment can feel disorienting and upsetting for you as a parent when

you are in the middle of it, the reality is that adolescence is actually

a well-studied and well-understood development phase for young

people. Beyond the popular myths there is actually a great deal of

information available about how to work with your adolescent more

effectively as they move through this important phase of their life.
